This project focused on creating creative captions for a five minute clip extracted from Cindy Goes to a Party.

I began the process of captioning by simply just watching the clip several times, trying to pay special attention to any sound effects used along the way and identify key characters. Once I understood those, I used Premiere Pro to auto-caption the entire clip, and then went in and corrected any mistakes line by line. The next step after that was to think about how I wanted to expand on the captions in order to make them more fun and accessible.

First, I began by choosing a different color for each character:

• Cindy: Pink

• Dennis: Green

• Cindy’s Mother: Yellow

• Fairy Godmother: Light Blue

  

  

I added background to the text to maximize readability across all backdrops. The next thing that I did was justify the text so that the relative position of each line matched the character that was speaking (i.e. if Dennis was on the right, the text would appear on the right side).

If the character moved across screen, I tried to reflect that as well.

There was a magical aspect to this particular video clip, so I aimed to capture that by playing with the general positioning of the text. When the Fairy Godmother first appears, I have the text spiral around to reflect the sense that the audio felt like falling into a dream.

Later, when the Fairy Godmother appears in a painting, I also added movement which matched the playful tone she uses. Additionally, I had the text fade in and out as she did.
