Caption vs Alt Text

These images were not originally ordered this way, but I thought they told an interesting story and decided to arrange them accordingly. Writing the captions and the alt text were two very different experiences - for the former, I employed simple sentence structure to convey a somewhat comedic tone, while for the latter, I made use of dramatic descriptions I hoped could be spoken aloud by a digital reader in order to achieve nearly the same effect.

The theme of this work is perhaps a slightly absurd look on every day life - I wanted to utilize the screen reader’s voice to deliver a narrative which was lacking in seriousness. While the screen reader would not be able to fully convey the silliness of the cat’s expressions, I hoped that the narrative’s delivery would make up for it in some way. This project and modality is still not particularly accessible for people who cannot make use of screen readers and also happen to be unable to interpret the images well.

Additional Modality

For this project, I created a tactile version of the comic. By laser cutting wood, engraving patterns, and removing tracks, I created a board which told the story on the left side, and conveyed the emotions on the right side. I also used swellform paper to create a tactile guide for the comic itself, introducing the setting as well as the characters.
